How to collect client feedback with a screen recording

A practical workflow for collecting website and design feedback: write a focused brief, send a recording link, and respond with timestamped notes.

Start with one clear question

A message such as “the page feels wrong” leaves a lot to interpretation. A screen walkthrough lets a client show the page, point to the part they mean, and explain what they expected. Use it for website reviews, design handoffs, and questions that are easier to show than describe. A live conversation can still be better when a decision needs immediate back-and-forth.

Before requesting a recording, narrow the task. Ask the client to review one page or one journey, such as finding a product and reaching checkout. Give them the website URL and the question you want answered. Avoid asking for a general review of an entire site in a three-minute recording.

Write a brief the client can follow

Try this request: “Open the pricing page on your desktop. Show us which plan you would choose and explain anything that makes that choice difficult. Please avoid entering payment details. Finish by telling us the single change that would help most.” This gives the recording a beginning, a specific task, and a useful conclusion.

If a client is reviewing an unfinished design, say which parts are ready for feedback. Separate wording, navigation, and visual feedback when they involve different decisions. The clearer the request, the less time you spend asking what a comment refers to.

Send a recording request in Rely

Sign in to Rely, create a request with your title and instructions, and share its link in the conversation you already have with the client. Guests do not need their own Rely account or an extension. Recording is designed for desktop Chrome and Edge.

The guest chooses a screen or window, enables the microphone if needed, and can include a camera. Before sharing a screen, they should close unrelated tabs and hide notifications or sensitive information. They can review the recording before sending it; choosing a screen does not submit a recording.

Turn the walkthrough into specific decisions

Watch the submitted recording in your workspace. Use timestamped comments to attach a question or response to the moment it concerns. For example, “At 0:42, should the monthly price be visible before selecting a plan?” is easier to resolve than a separate message saying “What about the price?”

Summarize the agreed changes in your normal task system. Distinguish an observed problem from a suggested solution, and ask a follow-up when the reason is unclear. Keep viewing links limited to the people who need them; Rely lets you create expiring sharing links.

Know the recording limits

Rely Free includes one successfully submitted recording total across the workspace, up to three minutes long. Deleting a recording does not restore that allowance. Pro is US$9 per month and supports three-minute recordings beyond the free allowance. Storage and per-request limits still apply. Check the pricing section for current plan availability before choosing a plan.
